Karen Katchur is a successful new writer of suspense thrillers whose path to getting published encompassed elements of old-time publishing and the brave new world.
Like most new writers, she could not get the attention of big-time New York agents. So she improvised and gained the services of Canadian agent P.S. Literary Agency. That was a fruitful union, landing her a book deal with St. Martin’s Press — a well-known New York publisher. That resulted in them bringing her Secrets of Lake Road into the world during 2015.
Then, after producing two books for St. Martin’s, she tried the new world. Amazon’s Thomas & Mercer imprint offered to publish her third book, so she gave them a try. They brought out her 2018 book River Bodies which seemed to work out well for her. The eBook of River Bodies recently stood at number 78 on Amazon’s bestseller list.
Karen has a B.S. in Criminal Justice and a Master’s degree in Education. Those interests in crime and writing gradually evolved into the novels that she has created. Karen lives with her husband and two children in Eastern Pennsylvania, a location that also figures prominently in her books.
The bottom line — use what you know. And don’t be afraid to try different paths to get where you want to go.
